The Geography of Arda: Continents and Oceans

Continents and Oceans

The Continents:

Arzdar: Region continent, spread across several continents and islands; defined by a shared culture, language family (Arnore languages, mainly Aryezi), and the Aralan religion. This area includes the eastern portion of the continent of Endor (Centerland), the western portion of the continent of North Romendor (Eastland), the southern portion of the continent Formendor (Northland), and the Aryezi island chain, and the islands of Aryezizdar, Ircha, and Shifzhaz. Basically Arzdar consists of the islands in Enear (Centersea), and the lands that touch that sea, as Azdar does not go too far inland. It covers 1/5 of Endor and 1/4 of North Romendor. Of the lands touching the Center Sea, only Durstar and Lanohloneny are not part of Arzdar. Meaning: Great Land

North Romendor: Technically a very large island, east of the center sea and west of the Great Sea. It includes many nations like Wiggazdar and the Hininim nation. While the eastern part of Arzdar is on this continent, the term North Romendor excludes the Arzdari part of it. It covers 3/4 of North Romendor. It has a fair and equal distribution of all weather and terrain. Meaning: North Eastland

Formendor: Large continent, very icy, filled with Pine forests and tundra. It includes 9/10 of Formendor, the southern part being part of Arzdar. To the south is the Center Sea. Meaning: Northland

Endor: The middle continent, it is the largest region; it is greater than all the other regions combined. Thus it is home to a great variety of climates and peoples. It includes 4/5 of Endor, the other 1/5 being part of Arzdar. On the east of it is the Center Sea, and in the west is the Great Sea. It almost stretches from the northern most point of Arda to halfway the southernmost point. Great deserts, forests, mountains, tundra, and plains are all here. Meaning: Center Land

Durstar: Island continent, which is very mountainous. Although it straddles the area between North Romendor and Formendor, (to its west, there is little water between it and Formendor, to its southwest is the Center Sea, to its east is the Great Sea), it is rather isolated. Maybe this is because much of it is icebound.  Meaning: Friends Land

Numendor: This is the smallest continent. It is really a bunch of islands deep in the Great sea, too far away from any other continent. Most of the islands contain steamy jungles. The largest island, Asra is barely 1/6 the size of Aryez. Meaning: West Land

South Romendor (Hyarmendor): Continent (large island) south of North Romendor, barely separated by water from it, bounded on the east by the Great sea, and on the west by the Center Sea, just like North Romendor. It is about 4/5 the size of North Romendor, and shares the climate and terrain patterns of its northern neighbor. Sometimes the two continents together may just be referred to as Romendor. Some nations on this continent include Makhastar and Lanohloneny. Meaning: South Eastland or South Land.

The Oceans:

Center Sea: Third largest ocean (but still huge!), but the main ocean since all the continents except Numendor border it. This ocean is dominated by the continent of Arzdar.

Great Sea: Vast ocean with few islands to the east of the Romendors, and to the west of Endor. Largest Ocean, greater than all the others combined.

North Sea: Smallest Ocean, consisting of the space between the northern shores of Endor and Formendor, and the North Pole

South Sea: Second largest ocean, south of Endor, South Romendor, Numendor, and Arzdar. It is huge and continues to the south pole. There are no islands in it except Aryezizdar, which is midway from Aryez to the south pole. One can sail this ocean and never come to land.

Minisea: This consists of the gaps between the continents that are not filled by an ocean; the gap between Formendor and Durstar, and the gap between North and South Romendor. The gap between Formendor and Endor is fairly large, and it is considered to be part of the Center Sea.
